This page is a 'stripography' of the story. I want to thank Richard Sheaf for the idea for this page. Most of the work that went into this was done by Phil Patterson who at times has been overlooked, but his contribution to the site is immense and i take this oppurtunity to thank him very much indeed. At the bottom ive also added a year by year breakdown of the Annuals and Summer Specials, who drew which year and an idea to the content etc.

Charley's War the graphic novel is released by Titan Books in November

The Anorak's footnote

The Annuals and Summer Specials

As ive already mentioned Joe Rarely drew the Annuals or Summer Special stories due to time constraints drawing Charley's War in his working week, here is a list of the annuals and Specials and who drew what and when.

Annuals

1981 The Unmistakable Cam kennedy drew this story, and all the rifles and uniforms are well researched and drawn ,story is about shellshock, and doubtfull that it's Mills writing the script as it's a bit wishy washy. Features the letters home idea.

1982- One of only two that Joe did, seven full pages in full colour , a little looser and untidy in places due to obvious time constraints but excellent none the less. Story is not by Mills i dont think as it is a rather unlikely yarn of slapstick type mishaps concerning Charley hanging onto the tail of a Sopwith Camel as it has a dogfight (?!)

1983- The other Joe Colquhoun story again in full colour across seven pages, story could be Mills. Set in a Hotel in a captured Village, and two stray German soldiers who are sheltering two little peasant french kids. Charley lets them go. Great artwork.

1984 Cam Kennedy again, and again a good effort research wise, story concerns the press being told not to take pictures of dead/dying tommies. Only half factually correct so again i dont think it's Pat Mills writing.

1985- Joe Colquhoun full colour cover this year but story is drawn by Mike Western and is spoilt by badly researched German uniforms and weapons, story is crap to be honest- a pithy nonsense about a captured tank.

1986 -Unknown artist, terrible story all round, shouldnt have bothered at all.

1987- Same artist as above and same writer by the quality of the script

1988- Very odd this one, it's a textual short story about a composer soldier called copeland who looses three fingers of his right hand and decides to do a kamikazee attack on the German lines.....hmm my thoughts exactly, unknown writer definately not Pat Mills. The writer is under the ridiculous illusion that the British were losing 10,000 men a day 'Charley was unaware of these figures of course' ,so was i mate! But here's the strange bit, it's graphics are culled mainly from the first day of the Somme artwork by Joe Colquhoun from the 1979 cover  'over the top' however if you look at the frames either side of the text its obvious that these were done for the story because they show the hapless Copeland complete with sheet music, and behind him Charley carrying his wounded officer as described in the text. This means that Joe drew specifically for this annual and it came out the year after his death, i actually think it was one of the last pieces of work he ever did, which is quite interesting. ive included a scan of it below. If anyone knows the story behind this please contact me.

Last time Joe drew charley's war?

Summer Specials

1979- Cam Kennedy with his inimitable ink and wash style, some nice artwork and well researched shame about the story about a carrier pidgeon.

1980-Cam Kennedy again with some even better artwork story not Mills, something about a dispatch rider.

1981- Terrible story and unknown artist from 2000AD, i forget his name, he also drew 'spinball wars' in Battle

1982- Some very nice artwork from the late great Geoff Campion, well researched as well, very good looking pages. I liked Geoff very much as it goes. Story about a messenger dog who gets killed, hmmm

1983- Cam Kennedy again and again very well done, story crap again

1984- Mike Western draws this one (Darkies Mob) and no disrespect to him, its very poor indeed, very badly researched he even draws the German coalscuttle helmets with the picklehaub spike as well, Story is awful by the same writer as most i think because all the supporting characters seem to be called smudger or Spud (!) hmmm.

1985- The artist who used to draw 'the sarge' in Battle draws this sentimental rubbish script

1986- Tragic all round this one same artist as above and the story is now set in ww2 for the first time

1987- Same artist as above but now oddly set in first world war, that cant help the story though.

1989- Textual short story set in ww2 , although not short enough, side panels drawn by the worst artist since tarzan took up pastels.

1990 unknown artist who has tried (not totally unnsucsessfully) to copy Joes style. Almost gets away with it if it wasnt for the awful script

1991- Last ever Charleys war to grace any page of a comic, drawn by the guy who used to do Hunters Si6 in Battle Action Force, Italian sounding name that eludes me, its ok nothing special-awful script and flogging a long dead horse sums it up.
